The sounds you are hearing come from recordings of broken instruments, and are part of a project that has inspired people to ‘adopt’ hundreds of badly damaged instruments and raise funds to repair and return them to the public schools.
You can use the Controls to adjust, playback, save and share your composition.

This is the Broken Orchestra Typewriter

click and type here, then play it back
As you type, hundreds of musical ideas are being ordered, processed, layered, filtered, and repeated according to the words you choose and how you type them. Each time you hit the spacebar you re-calibrate the system and deepen the algorithm that composes along with you.

Each box here contains a story based on a memory of failure in our lives
we chose one failure memory and meditated on the mental picture and physical space of that memory answering some simple questions:
By shifting our focus from the emotional weight of that "failure" we were able to experience it differently, and hear it differently with these new sounds.
go ahead, type a few failures here
Where are you?
What time of day or night does it seem to be?
What season does it seem to be?
Where is the light coming from?
What kind of light is it?
What’s the temperature like?
What does the air smell like?
What are you doing?
Is there anyone else in that place with you?
What are they doing?
Why are you there?
What are some of the sounds you can hear?
What are some of the things you can see?
What’s directly in front of you?
If you turn your head to your right, what’s there?
If you turn your head to the left, what do you see?
What is behind you?
What’s below you and around your feet?
What’s above your head?
What emotions are you feeling in this space?
feel free to try it here
After that, we wrote in first person starting with "I am..." about the memory, elaborating further on any of the items jotted down to the left.
Here's a space if you'd like to give it a go!
Some of us felt healed from things we'd carried for a long time, some of us felt lighter by taking the time to write about those perceived failures, and some of us just enjoyed listening to this new sound track we created with the Broken Orchestra
